Our rehearsal on Tuesday January 31st (at the Wantage CE Primary School, Newbury Road, Wantage; 7.30pm), is a routine one: the February 7th one will be slightly different. The first half will be taken by our current MD, Richard Smith. As Richard is leaving us after the March concert, we have the task of finding a replacement; after a round of CV reading and interviews, the Committee has asked three candidates to direct the Society in the second half of a rehearsal evening. The second candidate will be rehearsing us on Tuesday 7th: in fairness to him, please ensure that the mid-rehearsal break is kept to a strict maximum of five minutes. After taking our half-term break on February 14th, the third candidate will join us on February 21st.

Wantage Choral Society: The Process Continues …
January 22, 2012
2012 Is Not Just Olympics Year
December 6, 2011.
The Society is back in action, preparing for its first concert of 2012 (Saturday March 31st; Haydn’s Creation, Wantage Civic Hall). We rehearse on Tuesday evenings, at the Wantage Church of England Primary School, Newbury Road, Wantage, starting at 7.30pm. New members, in all voices, experienced or not in choral singing, will be most welcome. The audition process can be quite simply explained: there isn’t one.

Congratulations …
April 12, 2011Congratulations to Pauline Herbert (Alto) on the safe arrival of a daughter (Henrietta Rose). HRH and her Mum are both doing well.

Spring Concert 2011 — A Full House?
March 20, 2011.
Our thanks for an excellent Spring Concert go out to our Musical Director Richard Smith, to the West Forest Sinfonia, to our Soprano soloist Penny Grant, and to Dr. Sheikh Hojjat Ramzy, who made the traditional Muslim Call to Prayer which is such an unusual but effective part of our main work, Karl Jenkins’s “The Armed Man”. Thanks also to the people of Wantage and the surrounding area who gave us such great support: your Webmaster couldn’t see any empty seats, although his view of the audience area was obscured by some rather tall Tenors.

Easy Fund Raising?
February 5, 2010…
At last, a fund-raising method that does what it says on the tin (or the URL?). It’s www.easyfundraising.org.uk. You can raise a small but helpful amount of funding for the Society, while spending no more money than you had planned to do anyway in your online shopping.
Here’s all you have to do:
- Register (it’s free), or log-in if you’re already registered
- Enter your chosen fundraising cause as Wantage Choral Society
- Choose from one of the wide range of retailers or service providers, and do your on-line shopping as normal

Your London Marathon Competitor
April 22, 2009Congratulations to Peter McGowan (Bass), who finished the 2009 London Marathon last Sunday (26th April) on behalf of Ryder-Cheshire Volunteers, finishing in 24,081st place. We’re sure they wouldn’t object to a bit of belated sponsorship for him …

“A Child Of Our Time” Documentary
January 28, 2009Our Musical Director, Richard Smith, has prepared a documentary video on “A Child of Our Time”, by Sir Michael Tippett, which the Society performed on Saturday March 28th 2009 in Wantage Parish Church. You will find it on the “A Child Of Our Time” page of this site.

Liz Wilson – Thankyou
October 1, 2008Liz was chairperson of Wantage Choral Society for the last 5 years.
Guided by Liz, the choir went through quite a transformation under some very difficult and demanding circumstances, including changes in Directors of Music and rehearsal venue. Liz was also forefront of the campaign to save St Mary’s music block as an arts centre for Wantage.

The choir thanked Liz for all her hard work at their AGM on Tuesday September 30th. She is pictured above with one of our Tenors, William Jackson, being presented with a paperweight, books and a voucher to mark her departure.
